Transformation of Buildings and Reuse (3 ECTS)

Main Goal

Familiarise participants with design concepts for new structures that prioritize adaptability and facilitate the reuse of elements in the event of deconstruction. Develop approaches for the rehabilitation of existing structures through an interdisciplinary lens, integrating the expertise of architects, structural engineers and material scientists. Understand the impact in terms of carbon footprint of design and retrofit decisions.

Main Skills Acquired

  • Understanding how reuse strategies influence the carbon footprint
  • Design concepts for new buildings that combine structural efficiency, adaptability and reuse
  • Examine reuse options for existing buildings not originally designed with reuse in mind, ranging from material recycling to element reuse and whole-building adaptation
  • Learn key principles of retrofitting and adapting existing structures to extend their service life

Main Topics

  • Impact of design decisions on the carbon footprint of a building
  • Design of new buildings: designing for structural efficiency, adaptability and reuse
  • Adaptation of existing buildings
  • Reuse of material and elements from the existing building stock
  • LCA for design decisions
